SLIM’s ‘Marketing Roks Challenge’ ends on high note

The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) held the finals of ‘Marketing Roks Challenge 2013’ program at Buddhist Cultural Centre recently.

Musaeus College emerged winners while St. Lawrence’s Convent and Stafford International School were first and second Runners-up respectively. The best presenter award was won by Mandarika Jayasiri of Leeds International School.

Representing St. Josephs College, Alethia International, Mari Stella College, Staford International, Leeds International, St. Lawrence’s Convent, Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Musaeus College, Royal Institute, Methodist College 1, Methodist College 2, Royal College, Belvoir College, Royal Institute, OKI International, Yoshida Shokanji, Wycherley International, St. Nicholas International and Trinity College, 19 teams participated in the program.

The ‘Marketing Roks Challenge’ offered the students an opportunity to experience a real-life situation of solving and presenting a corporate solution to a given issue. The program was extremely competitive right from the beginning, and teams with analytical and creative skills had the ‘edge’ over others.  

The eminent panel of judges comprised of Key resource person Nalin Munasighe, G.S. Sylvester and Gowrie Indraratne. “The ‘Marketing Challenge’ which is the gaming component of the Marketing Roks Program was a marketing case study given to school A/L students. Students were expected to handle it as any other professional marketing case study, where they were expected to carry out a market/industry analysis.”

Alethea International School CEO/ Managing Director and Coordinating Principal Kumari Hapugalle Perera explained. “At the gaming session the students had to make a presentation to justify their case.”

Emphasising the importance of the event, SLIM Immediate President Tilan Wijeyesekera said, the ‘Marketing Roks Challenge’ offered students an opportunity to experience a real-life situation of solving and presenting a corporate solution to a given issue. “This will definitely prepare the younger generation to face the challenges of the corporate world with greater confidence, dedication and integrity.”

Alethea International School partnered the National Body of Marketing in this endeavour. Etisalat Marketing Manager and current SLIM President Gamika De Silva was present at the final event, where he delivered a speech, stressing on what marketing is and how marketing is as a career.

Prior to the finals, the Briefing Session of the Marketing Challenge was held on 8 February, while the Gaming Session where A/L students from 19 teams worked on a marketing case study was held on 22 February.
