The oldest speed hill climb in South Asia, the Mahagastota Hill Climb organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club, will kick off for the 79th year at the newly resurfaced Mahagastotta on Sunday, 7 April commencing from 8.30 a.m. onwards.   “So many changes have taken place at the Mahagastotta track. The surface is completely new, smooth and cambered, and the side curbs are being constructed to ensure safety,” said Niroshan Perira,

President of the Ceylon Motor Sports Club. “The CMSC expects the records to tumble with competitors eager to break their own class records as well as try and go for new ones as well.”

This year’s season opener as competitors would be afforded a non compulsory, supervised practice session from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. on Saturday, 6 April, while the meet will commence at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, 7 April.

Current course record holders on this track include Shafraz Junaid on the bike and Nishan Weerasooriya with Rohan de Silva in cars.

The track has been upgraded by the CMSC to include wide side curbing and safety fences with TAG Hauer timing equipment. Marshals who were trained by CAMS of Australia will be there to conduct the meet.
