The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project, which has been delayed for a period of two years, will be implemented by the Motor Traffic Department, which comes under the purview of the Passenger Transport Management Ministry.
In a statement issued , the Ministry stated that the decision was taken following a discussion on the RFID project at the Ministry the day before, at which Passenger Transport Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera inquired about the delays in implementation. Parliamentary COPE Committee Chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanna was also present at the occasion.
While preliminary work has been completed, RFID, when implemented, will help reduce traffic congestion in the country, and the Minister has advised the Traffic Police and Motor Traffic Department to implement the project as a solution for increased road safety and traffic control during rush hour in urban areas.
In addition to this, the project will enhance access control, and the project will give buildings and parking lots the ability to allow or deny access to a vehicle depending on its RFID tag.
The system will also have vehicle identification features, whereby information on a vehicle can be accessed via its RFID tag, and this will be beneficial to vehicle rental agencies, car dealerships, and service centres. The RFID tag will also aid in tracking vehicles in real time without having to invest in expensive infrastructure.
