The automobile industry is fast becoming a driving force of economic development. Associated Motor ways Ltd. (AMW) has been a pioneer in the automobile industry in Sri Lanka, providing much needed leadership for top end, high quality vehicle brand representation as well as representing high end brands in lubricants, spare parts and other services. With the increasing demand for vehicles and parts, AMW recently launched their central assembly facility at Sedawatta on 11 November 2013. The launch was presided and declared open by AMW Chairman Len Hunt and Group Managing Director Samantha Rajapakse. The establishment of assembly plants has recently contributed to increasing industry specialisation within the Asian region. While in the past, automobile companies produced almost the entire vehicle within their production lines, large parts of value-added components are now outsourced, assigning a much larger role to auto parts suppliers than in the past. The advantage of this strategy is that it enables automobile producers to benefit from economies of scale as they can build more models on the same platform, a trend strengthened by the recent consolidation in the global car industry. AMW’S new assembly facility is built with the latest technology, and is capable of producing an output of 70 units per day at present. Currently the division converts semi knocked down units into completed sellable units in a semi-automated production assembly line. The assembly facility is conveniently located between the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and Peliyagoda. Although the facility currently caters to the Piaggio and Yamaha units, AMW hopes to soon expand to other models and units as well. The light truck and agricultural segment vehicles too will soon be accommodated at the facility said members of the management. The assembly facility is yet another step towards a fully integrated approach in the automobile industry for AMW who already represent reputed brands such as Nissan, Suzuki, Suzuki Maruti, Piaggio, Renault, Yamaha, Castrol, BP, Goodyear as well as offer financial leasing facilities.
