Laureus Sport for Good Foundation organised Beefy’s Big Walk in Sri Lanka, which started on 1 November 2013 and ended on 8 November 2013. Named ‘Beefy’s Big Sri Lanka Walk’, the event saw the knighted all-rounder Sir Ian Botham walk 160 miles in eight days from Kilinochchi in the north to Galle in the south of Sri Lanka. His objective was to raise funds for the underprivileged children in Sri Lanka.
Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO) was the official logistics partner for Beefy’s Big Sri Lanka Walk and as such all passenger and cargo transportation needs were looked after by DIMO from end-October till mid-November; from the very first arrival to the departure of the international participant.
The logistics needs of the event were complex considering the frequent arrival and departure of sports celebrities who helped to make the event a success. Five vehicles with drivers and unlimited fuel were offered by DIMO as the logistics partner.
A Mercedes-Benz E-Class was used for pick-up and drop-off of all celebrities from airport, and also for their transportation needs from one hotel to the other during their short stays whilst the walk was in progress.
Sports personalities including Sir Ian Botham and his wife Lady Kathryn Botham, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, Steve Waugh, Morne Du Plessis, Allan Border and Kumar Sangakkara participated in this event.
A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter passenger vehicle was used to transport the celebrities and officials of the Laureus Foundation throughout the 160 mile stretch. This 21-seater passenger vehicle provided superior luxury and comfort, and was the preferred choice for safe and fast movements of passengers from one location to another at the end of each day.
A Mercedes-Benz MB 140 van provided transportation for international media crew and their luggage. This vehicle was always packed with heavy equipment and many people and helped to broadcast the charitable cause internationally. A TATA Winger van transported the rest of the international participants who had flown down especially to take part in the walk, most from UK. This 15-seater van provided safety and comfort to all the passengers throughout the eight-day journey.
In addition a TATA Xenon 4-wheel-drive double cab was used to transport heavy goods needed for the daily walks, which included food and water.
DIMO and Mercedes-Benz together with TATA is proud to partner this great cause which will benefit the society in Sri Lanka. The celebrities and the organisers were extremely satisfied with the luxury, comfort and safety offered by the Mercedes-Benz and TATA vehicles, and the contribution from DIMO towards the charitable cause.
