The National Cham-pionship Awards Presentation Ceremony organized by the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) was held last night at the Golden Rose Recreation Complex, Maharagama Road, Boralesgamuwa, attended by a galaxy of Motor Racing enthusiasts.

Veteran Motor Racer, Dinesh Jayawardana received the National Championship Award for the year 2011 in the Formula 1600cc Class.

Dinesh was closely followed in this even by another experienced driver, Shafraz Junaid.

Following in the footsteps of his father, the late Mana Jayawardana, Dinesh has been participating regularly in Motor Races for nearly a decade with the backing and much needed support from Mobil Lubricants during his racing career.

Having recorded two wins in the two stages competed, out of four, Dinesh collected the maximum points from these two wins.

Although he could not compete in the following events, the points gained from the two events was sufficient for him to grab the title ‘National Champion’ in the Formula 1600cc event, as no other Competitor could go past his tally of points, even though they competed in the other events.

The other two contenders who were on the hunt for the Title were Ashan Silva and Shafraz Junaid who had a grim battle between them throughout the four stages . Although Shafraz Junaid got past Ashan and tied with Dinesh at 20 points each, Dinesh had two good wins, giving the Panel of Judges no difficulty in selecting him as the Winner, since Junaid failed to achieve a single win throughout the series.

Dinesh did not fail his Sponsors, Mobil Lubricants who stood by him throughout the Championship, thereby bringing honour to the Mobil banner by winning the Championship. Dinesh hopes to continue his winning streak under the Mobil banner during 2012 as well, by competing with other Veterans in the field.

The other big names in Motor Racing who competed alongside Dinesh Jayawardana under the Mobil Flag were Rohan de Silva and Ashan Silva. Though they failed to reach the pinnacle at the Formula Championship category, the two of them were seen in action at every Championship Meet conducted at the Pannala Circuit.
