Land Rover will partner the Arugambay Surf Classic 2013 as the official ‘Surfers’ Ride’.
According to Sheran Fernando, Managing Director of SML Frontier Automotive (sole agents for Land Rover in Sri Lanka), the company wants to tie up with this event as it is in line with the Land Rover brand values of exploring the outdoors, sports, adventure, etc., and it also wishes to partner in developing the sport of surfing in Sri Lanka.
Land Rover has even designed a Land Rover Defender known as the ‘Defender – Arugambay,’ which will be exhibited during the surfing championship.
The local Arugambay Surf Club will also be involved in the organising of this event.
“Arugambay Beach Wear organises this event every year to develop surfing, local
commerce, and tourism through sports and the event is now a much-looked-forward-to annual happening,” said Arugam Bay Beachwear CEO Ajai Vir Singh.
Singh went on to say that the competition which would last three days would see two days limited to Sri Lankan surfers only and one day which is the open day, for all foreign participants. “From next year we will open the entire competition to all foreign participants as well; however I am getting a surf champion as a mentor this year who is a former World Surfing Champion from Australia to leverage his cult status and thus create more international awareness about Surfing in Sri Lanka, as well as to raise the bar of the competition.”
Now in its third year, Singh intends developing this annual surfing competition to be one of the best in Asia. Titled the ‘Arugam Bay Surf Classic’ and hosted (obviously) at Arugam Bay, one of the world’s top 10 surf destinations, Singh wants to give the sport of surfing a formal identity in Sri Lanka, as it is fast growing in popularity.
“Surfing is currently the toast of the world, enjoying amazing growth globally, and we feel Sri Lanka can definitely tap into that growth and attract more sports tourists, thus making Arugambay a surf destination for international surfers”, said Sheran Fernando.
Land Rover will also partner Arugambay at their resort wear pageant to be held later this year as well.
