SML Frontier Ltd., the sole agents of Land Rover in Sri Lanka, launched the new Discovery Sport on 8 May at the BMICH.

The event was graced by SML frontier automotive Managing Director Sheran Fernando. The Discovery Sport is prepared with a four-cylinder turbocharger diesel engine. The 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine features high-pressure direct injection, low-friction internal components and smart regenerative charging for outstanding performance and fuel economics. The turbo diesel motor is mated to a responsive nine-speed automatic.

Fernando stated that it was designed and engineered to be the world’s most capable and versatile premium compact SUV. He added that the vehicle would not only appeal to existing Land Rover customers but to a whole new group of people who may have never considered the Land Rover brand before.

“This is the first time that there is a vehicle launch in this motor show and it is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment,” he added.

The new SUV features a rigid, high-strength steel and boron body shell, with a roof that will support more than 4.5 times the vehicle’s weight. The vehicle also has a comprehensive occupant safety package, including driver and passenger airbags, a driver knee airbag and side curtain and thorax airbags. The Discovery Sport has been awarded the minimum five-star safety rating through the Euro NCAP crash test.

To ensure exceptional durability and reliability, the Discovery Sport has been subjected to Land Rover’s stringent on- and off-road testing and development regime. The fleets of development vehicles have covered thousands of miles over many months of arduous tests, in over 20 countries with different extremes of climate and road surfaces.

Land Rover said its customers were the reason a whole new vehicle had been developed. The company went on to say that its new vehicle captures the innovative spirit and iconic design of the brand, which changed the world of motoring when it was launched over 40 years ago.
