A 26 year old Sri Lankan youth has designed a fully electric turbo car, and has called the car Elca (Electric Car).
The youth, Nilanga Senevirathne, is an entrepreneur technologist by profession.
The car is totally environment friendly and has been devised, constructed and commissioned by Nilanga alone, out of 60% of the materials which were available in local market. Nilanga has said that the car is economical where both purchase and running costs are concerned and is a showcase of his love for nature as it is 100% eco friendly.
He has said that the Elca when it is marketed would cost only Rs. 700,000 and cost per km would be approximately Rs. 3 whereas in other cars the running cost would be around Rs. 11.
Nilanga has also said that he has received a host of inquiries from over 18 countries to purchase this eco friendly car and he has even earmarked a site in Kalutara Industrial Estate to produce the vehicle on a large scale. Commercial operations are expected to commence by early next year.
Rear wheel driven Elca weighs 600 kgs, of which batteries weigh 240 kgs. It has a capacity to travel 80 to 100 kms on a single full charge. Elca has a top speed of 60 kmph and its batteries needs eight hours to charge fully. If everything goes accordingly, Elca could be seen on roads by 2013.
