The Mazda 2 for 2015 is 4,070mm long x 1,730mm wide x 1,450mm high, on a 2,585mm wheelbase. The Hazumi concept is fitted with a newly developed 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine which promises outstanding fuel economy without compromising powerful, linear performance. In Japan the 1,348cc petrol engine has shrunk to 1,298cc. The 100PS/150Nm 1,496cc Skyactiv petrol engine as used in the Mazda 3 is also offered. In addition to enhancing safety fundamentals such as driving position and field of view, Hazumi adopts Mazda’s range of i-ACTIVSENSE safety features. Meanwhile, MZD Connect offers drivers the convenience of smartphone connectivity in a format that is safe and appropriate for in-vehicle use. The instrument cluster is designed around the driver’s centre axis. It features a single, centrally-positioned gauge with minor displays spreading like wings on either side. The layout of the centre display, Active Driving Display, and commander control, is based on Mazda’s unique human machine interface (HMI) concept called the Heads-Up Cockpit. It is designed to help drivers deal with large amounts of information while keeping their eyes on the road ahead and maintaining a safe and stable body position. The concept’s name is a Japanese word meaning to ‘bound’ or ‘spring up’ and was chosen to convey an image of a small but vigorous animal, bursting with energy. It also describes potential B-segment buyers: young, dynamic, vibrant and ambitious. Mazda confirmed some details of its new 1.5 litre Skyactiv D engine for the Mazda 2. New innovations for the small-displacement newcomer to the SKYACTIV range include an expanded homogenous lean burn range, even less mechanical resistance, and new insulation technology to counter the increased cooling loss associated with a smaller engine. So it’s exceptionally efficient and clean, delivering top-class fuel economy and emissions, and will comply with Euro 6 without needing pricey exhaust after treatment. In addition to the SKYACTIV-D 1.5, the all-new Mazda2 will come equipped with the full line-up of SKYACTIV Technology, including the highly efficient six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and SKYACTIV-MT manual transmissions. It will also have Mazda’s fuel-saving i-stop idle-stop and i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration systems. Mazda expects its new clean diesel-powered supermini to achieve the best fuel economy of any combustion engine powered vehicle available in Japan (according to Japan’s strict JC08 test, excluding hybrids and microcars). Combustion mode transition control technology and high dispersion solenoid injectors to suppress cooling losses. High- and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation used to extend the homogeneous lean burn range, improving fuel economy and the sense of performance. Cooling water control valves and water jacket spacers to improve combustion efficiency while reducing mechanical resistance. Variable geometry turbocharger with rotation sensor to deliver plentiful boost pressure throughout the engine’s rpm range. Intercooler integrated into the intake manifold to improve acceleration response and turbocharger efficiency.
