The Mercedes-Benz club organised a fun rally on 9 November (Sunday) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The rally started off from the new DIMO 800 premises and ended up at the Viharamahadevi Park, where the festivities took place at the Open Air Theatre.

Mercedes Club of Sri Lanka President Upali Kapilasena said: “It was indeed our pleasure to participate at the event organised by the German Embassy to mark 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Twenty-two Mercedes-Benz cars took part at this event, out of which 15 were classics. Different vintage vehicles added colour to the rally, which also included the latest Mercedes-Benz models.” The club members were welcomed by the German Ambassador Dr. Jürgen Morhard.
The following models took part in the rally – Mercedes-Benz 280SE Sedan, Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe, Mercedes-Benz W108, Mercedes-Benz W110, Mercedes-Benz W115, Mercedes-Benz W123 Station Wagon (one-of-a-kind) and the Mercedes-Benz young classic range that included Mercedes-Benz W124, Mercedes-Benz W126, and the Mercedes-Benz SL range (that included a R107 and R129). The gathering also saw the newer generation of Mercedes-Benz cars, which included the Mercedes-Benz CLK, the Mercedes-Benz C207 E-Class Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz W221 and the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic or East Germany, and the sole purpose of the barrier was to cut off West Berlin from East Germany and East Berlin. The barrier included guarded towers placed along large concrete walls. The fall of the Berlin Wall marked a radical change in the political landscape of Europe.
With communalism losing its passion and the decline of many pro-soviet governments marked the beginning of a new era in Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded with East Germany and West Germany unified as one nation.
DIMO has represented the best engineered brands from Germany for more than seven decades. Hence DIMO also took part in the anniversary event and the rally, as the only authorised distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Sri Lanka.
DIMO Chairman Ranjith Pandithage and Mrs. Pandithage, DIMO CEO Gahanath Pandithage, Mercedes Service GM Tharanga Gunawardena and Mercedes-Benz Head of Sales Rajeev Pandithage were present at this event, whilst members of the Mercedes-Benz Club of Sri Lanka Ex-Co were also present with their families.
