The first-ever Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch competition in Sri Lanka demonstrated the influence of the driver on their truck’s fuel consumption. The results among the five finalists of the truck driving event in Colombo showed a remarkable spread of 34% in fuel efficiency. Applied to the operating costs of a transportation business this amount could add up to sizeable savings. Volvo Trucks recently invited drivers from select locations within Sri Lanka to the premises of Swedish Trading Company, dealer for Volvo Trucks and Buses. These drivers had qualified from a fleet of 35 Volvo drivers, operating on various routes. In the course of the event the drivers went through a training, being given tips on improving fuel efficiency and getting the maximum benefit from their Volvo trucks. Benefits The benefit of increased fuel efficiency is simple: It is good for business, and it is good for the environment. Getting the most from every drop of fuel depends on factors that range from engine and transmission performance to truck cab design, the routes and most importantly: the driver. Acknowledging this vital role of the driver, Volvo Trucks is hosting Fuelwatch as annual competition throughout the Asia Pacific. This competition is not just about finding out who is the most fuel efficient driver; it is much more about developing the most fuel efficient drivers. Fuelwatch is meant as a long-term initiative, providing continuous training to drivers and improving their professional skills. Developing competence, creating awareness Larbi Hbil, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Asia Oceania Sales for Region South Asia explains: “Firstly Fuelwatch is a competence development effort, it helps all of the drivers participating, to improve their skills, to drive in a safer and more fuel efficient way. And of course, Fuelwatch also creates awareness, not only amongst the drivers but also amongst their companies, amongst our esteemed customers. It shows ways how to significantly reduce fuel consumption, and makes drivers and customers think more about how to save fuel, and thereby optimising their profitability.” Bearing in mind that today’s  fuel prices account for a large portion of a truck  fleet’s total operating costs, the seen spread of 34% translates into a substantial cost saving potential, allowing for higher profits. Making its voice heard If looking at the bigger picture, Fuelwatch may have an even wider impact though, as Larbi Hbil further elaborates: “Fuelwatch is also Volvo Trucks’ way of addressing the society and the industry and making sure that our voice is heard. With the Fuelwatch competition, and together with all the participants and partners, we aim to impact the industry to drive progress in terms of fuel efficiency. Let’s not forget: Less fuel consumption not only helps the bottom line, but also the environment. Hence, Fuelwatch is perfectly in line with our core values: quality, safety and environmental care.” With the first-ever competition in Sri Lanka just completed, Larbi Hbil is truly happy with its outcome, and confident about the next steps: ”I can promise you we will continue with Fuelwatch in the South Asia region, As for now, I sincerely hope that the drivers, the customers enjoyed the competition and are equally excited about Fuelwatch as I am. And I am confident; our Sri Lankan driver will give us great pride, when representing his country in the APAC final in Australia.”
