A shipment of 1.5 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine will reach the island on Friday, the Health Ministry stated yesterday.
The vaccines will be provided by the United States of America through the COVAX facility. According to the Health Ministry, 750,000 doses will be administered as the first dose and the remaining 750,000 doses will be administered as the second dose a month later.
This will be the fifth COVID-19 vaccine to be administered in Sri Lanka, with the AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm and Pfizer vaccines currently being administered.
The country’s COVID-19 immunisation program on Monday administered COVID-19 vaccine doses to 232,526 persons, raising the number of persons to receive the first dose to 4,215,519 and the second dose to 1,504,809.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, persons vaccinated on Monday include 173,988 persons who received the first dose of Sinopharm and 40,276 persons who received the second dose of Sinopharm. In total, the first dose of the vaccine has been administered to 3,128,403 persons and the second dose has been administered to 1,104,496 persons.
The first dose of Sputnik V was administered to 13,357 persons on Monday, raising the number of persons to receive the first dose of the vaccine to 138,801 and the number of persons to receive the second dose to 14,464.
The first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 23,073 persons, including 4,725 persons vaccinated on Monday.
The Epidemiology Unit states that 180 persons received the second dose of AstraZeneca. As of Monday, 925,242 persons had received the first dose of the vaccine and 385,849 persons had received the second dose.
