1,568 more test positive for COVID-19

The country’s COVID-19 detections rose to 276,106 with 1,568 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

The Health Promotion Bureau states that 12,811 PCR tests were carried out yesterday. Among the patients detected were 1,488 persons linked to the New Year cluster. This raises the cumulative patient count of the Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year clusters to 268,131.

The cumulative patient count includes 173,440 persons from the New Year cluster which emerged in April and is the biggest COVID-19 cluster in the country. In addition to this, 82,785 patients from the Peliyagoda cluster, 7,463 patients from the Prisons cluster and 3,059 patients from the Divulapitiya cluster, have also been detected.

The country’s local COVID-19 cases also include 950 Navy personnel and their close contacts, and 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster.

In total, 63,891 persons from Colombo, 48,439 persons from Gampaha, 30,275 persons from Kalutara, 14,537 persons from Kurunegala, and 13,746 persons from Kandy have tested positive for COVID-19.

During the third wave of the pandemic, 31,594 persons from Colombo, 29,905 persons from Gampaha, and 23,217 persons from Kalutara have tested positive for the virus.

The district distribution of patients takes into account the 1,507 persons who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. The Department of Government Information states that Sunday’s detections include 239 persons from Galle, 211 persons from Gampaha, and 142 persons from Colombo.

A total of 13,777 PCR tests and 3,295 rapid antigen tests were performed on Sunday, with the patients detected including 1,393 persons from the New Year cluster, 99 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 15 Sri Lankan returnees from overseas.

In total, 5,663 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 328 foreigners have tested positive for COVID-19. At present, 26,363 persons are under medical care and 873 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

Meanwhile, the country’s COVID-19 recoveries rose to 246,241 with 1,804 persons discharged from treatment centres yesterday.
