10 more COVID-19 deaths confirmed

  • Includes first Police Officer to die due to COVID-19

Nine COVID-19 deaths were yesterday confirmed by health authorities, bringing the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 365.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, four of the deaths occurred yesterday. This includes that of a 61-year-old individual from Anuradhapura, who tested positive for COVID-19 while at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital, where she died of trauma of blood poisoning associated with COVID-19 and heart failure.

A 50-year-old individual from Kurunegala yesterday died of COVID-pneumonia at the Homagama Base Hospital, where he was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.

An individual from Horana also died yesterday. According to health authorities, the individual tested positive for COVID-19 at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and was transferred to the Colombo East Base Hospital, where he died of blood poisoning, COVID-pneumonia and lung cancer. He was 61 years old.

A 73-year-old from Mawanella was transferred to the Teldeniya Base Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Mawanella Base Hospital. He died of COVID-pneumonia and heart disease yesterday.

On 7 February, an individual from Negombo died of respiratory failure and COVID-pneumonia at the Homagama Base Hospital, where he was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Welisara Chest Hospital. He was 70 years old.

A 45-year-old individual from Colombo 12 tested positive for COVID-19 at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital, where she died of COVID-pneumonia and cancer on 7 February.

The same day, a 76-year-old individual from Kayts died of COVID-pneumonia and paralysis at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, where she was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at a private hospital in Colombo.

On 5 February, a 95-year-old individual from Colombo 15 died of COVID-pneumonia at home.

Health authorities also state that an individual from Gurudeniya tested positive for COVID-19 at the Kandy General Hospital and was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital, where he died of COVID-pneumonia and blood poisoning on 1 February at the age of 42.

Additionally, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana confirmed that a police sub-inspector (59) attached to the Monaragala police died due to COVID-19, thus becoming the first police officer to die due to the virus.
