A total of 194 schools in the Northern region have been closed, leading to significant education and social challenges, as disclosed by Governor P.S.M. Charles of the Northern Province.
Governor Charles highlighted that the closure of schools is not limited to a single institution but is prevalent throughout the North and East. The primary reasons behind these closures are the migration of families from rural areas to urban centres and a decline in birth rates, resulting in a lack of student enrolment.
The migration of families seeking better opportunities in cities has negatively impacted rural areas, leading to a decreased student population. Furthermore, declining birth rates have contributed to fewer children entering Grade 01, exacerbating the problem. As a consequence, approximately 194 schools have been compelled to shut down, creating a significant setback for education in the region.
In addition to the education challenges, Governor Charles also drew attention to several social issues requiring urgent attention. Divorce rates have been on the rise, while childbirth rates have declined. Moreover, the region is grappling with escalating problems related to alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide.
Governor Charles emphasised the necessity for collective action and collaboration between local communities and the diaspora to find sustainable solutions. She called upon both groups to acknowledge the challenges faced by the community and work together effectively to address them.
Governor Charles also stressed the critical need to address prevalent mental health issues among the youth, students, children, and families.
Governor Charles urged the diaspora communities to actively participate in finding solutions and underscored that the survival and progress of the community depend on collective efforts. By focusing on education, social concerns, and mental health, the community can overcome the current challenges and pave the way for a brighter future.
