Sri Lanka’s daily COVID-19 detections exceeded 2,000 for the seventh consecutive day, with 2,561 persons testing positive for COVID-19 yesterday.
However, despite the rising COVID-19 detections, travel restrictions are yet to be implemented. When questioned about the possibility of another lockdown, Health Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Hemantha Herath said a decision on travel restrictions would be made if the situation goes out of control. He added that the Government regularly reviews the country’s COVID-19 situation.
The COVID-19 patients detected yesterday include 2,543 persons from the New Year cluster, with the Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year cluster now expanding to 310,165 patients. This includes 213,903 persons from the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 7,865 persons from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster.
In addition to this, 6,340 Sri Lankan overseas arrivals and 328 foreigners have also tested positive for COVID-19.
In total, 318,755 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic.
This includes 73,373 persons from Colombo, 57,443 persons from Gampaha, 34,165 persons from Kalutara, 15,559 persons from Kurunegala, and 15,125 persons from Galle.
During the third wave of the pandemic, 41,076 persons from Colombo, 38,909 persons from Gampaha, and 27,107 persons from Kalutara have tested positive for COVID-19. This takes into account the 2,425 COVID-19 patients detected on Tuesday, of which 311 were from Matale, 293 from Colombo, and 223 from Kalutara.
The patients detected on Tuesday include 2,409 persons from the New Year cluster, 14 persons from the Prisons cluster, and two Sri Lankan overseas arrivals.
At present, 29,586 persons are under medical care and 1,332 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation. The Epidemiology Unit states that 1,754 persons were discharged from hospitals yesterday, raising the country’s COVID-19 recoveries to 284,524.
According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 14,569 PCR tests were carried out yesterday. On Tuesday, 11,293 PCR tests and 5,076 rapid antigen tests were carried out.
