The country’s COVID-19 patient count rose to 216,134 with 2,738 persons yesterday testing positive for COVID-19.
Daily COVID-19 detections have remained above 2,000 since 9 May, despite travel restrictions in place since the end of May. While they are to be lifted at 4:00 a.m. on 14 June, conflicting reports were yesterday circulated on the relaxation of travel restrictions. However, the Government is yet to make an announcement regarding an extension or relaxation of restrictions on 14 June.
While a drop in daily COVID-19 detections is yet to be seen, PCR testing has remained below 25,000 since 21 May and the Health Promotion Bureau states that 19,828 PCR tests were performed yesterday.
Among the patients detected yesterday are 2,715 persons linked to the New Year cluster. Since October 2020, 209,332 patients have been detected from the Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year clusters.
The cumulative patient count of the clusters takes into account the 114,243 patients from the New Year cluster, 82,785 patients from the Peliyagoda cluster, 6,530 patients from the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 patients from the Divulapitiya cluster detected in the island. In addition to the above clusters, the country’s local cases also include 950 Navy personnel and their contacts and 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster.
In terms of imported COVID-19 cases, 4,541 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 324 foreigners have also tested positive for COVID-19.
On Wednesday, 2,693 persons from the New Year cluster, 23 persons from the Prisons cluster, 13 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and six foreigners tested positive for COVID-19. Of the patients, 545 persons are from Gampaha District, 543 persons are from Colombo District, 358 persons are from Kalutara District, 155 persons are from Kandy District, and 130 persons are from Batticaloa District.
To date, 53,667 persons from Colombo, 36,405 persons from Gampaha, 23,082 persons from Kalutara, 11,371 persons from Kandy, and 10,851 persons from Kurunegala have tested positive for COVID-19. In the Western Province, 21,370 persons from Colombo, 17,871 persons from Gampaha and 16,024 persons from Kalutara have contracted the virus during the third wave.
At present, 31,986 persons are under medical care and 1,300 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation. Meanwhile, hospitals yesterday discharged 1,811 persons, bringing the country’s total COVID-19 recoveries to 182,238.
