2,877 persons test positive for COVID-19

The country’s total COVID-19 detections rose to 189,241 with the detection of 2,877 COVID-19 positive persons yesterday.

According to the Department of Government Information, the patients detected yesterday include 2,845 persons linked to the New Year cluster. The Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, Prisons and New Year clusters have thus risen to 182,616 patients.

This includes 87,947 persons linked to the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons linked to the Peliyagoda cluster, 5,980 persons linked to the Prisons cluster, and 3,059 persons linked to the Divulapitiya cluster.

The country’s total patient count also includes 4,361 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 318 foreigners.

This takes into account the patients detected on Monday, of which 2,854 were from the New Year cluster, 30 were Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, and 28 were from the Prisons cluster.

Monday’s patients include 490 persons from Colombo, 322 persons from Gampaha, 261 persons from Kandy, 260 persons from Kalutara, and 150 persons from Batticaloa. The district distribution of COVID-19 patients detected to date shows 48,303 persons from Colombo, 32,207 persons from Gampaha, 19,189 persons from Kalutara, 9,899 persons from Kandy, and 9,234 persons from Kurunegala.

At present, 34,386 persons are under medical care, including 610 persons at the Punani Treatment Centre, 514 persons at the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, and 459 persons at the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital.

There are also 1,776 persons suspected of having COVID-19 under observation at various hospitals.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 1,631 persons were yesterday discharged from hospitals having recovered from the virus. This includes 110 persons from the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 80 persons from the Kahawatte Treatment Centre, and 76 persons from the Gallela Treatment Centre.

A total of 153,371 persons have recovered from the COVID-19 virus to date.

According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 17,627 PCR tests were performed in the island yesterday. 

43 COVID-related deaths have been recorded, increasing the death toll to 1,527.
