Senior DIG of the Western Province Anura Senanayake told Court yesterday that he would take responsibility for the security of Bar Association President Upul Jayasuriya. At the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, DIG Senanayake said Attorney Jayasuriya’s request for police security had been referred to Law and Order Ministry Secretary, Maj. Gen. (rtd) Nanda Mallawarachchi for recommendation. The Senior Police official told Colombo Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya that the police had deployed 27 intelligence officers to look into the security of the BASL Chief’s residence, office and during his travel. Attorney Jayasuriya told Court that since he could not identify the intelligence personnel, it could become confusing whether he was being followed by intelligence or unknown persons. The BASL President requested that these intelligence officials be introduced to him privately. Senior DIG Senanayake responded that he would let the senior lawyer know about that following discussions on the issue.. The senior police official told Court that investigations into the persons following Jayasuriya had revealed that there was clear CCTV footage of the persons. Senior DIG Senanayake told the Colombo Magistrate that for personal reasons he had recused himself from the investigation. The investigation was proceeding under the supervision of Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne. The BASL filed action in court saying the Police was not providing security to its President after he was followed for several hours a few weeks ago. The case is to be taken up again on 25 August.
