5 Police Inspectors killed in bizarre Defender Jeep accident

Five Police Inspectors were killed and seven others injured when a Defender Jeep carrying a group of PSD officers collided head on with a private bus yesterday in Minuwangoda.

The driver of the ill-fated bus is also among the injured.

Police said that two persons were killed on the spot after the accident which occurred at Yagodamulla in Minuwangoda on the Colombo-Kurunegala main road.

The Defender Jeep had collided head on with an oncoming private bus while attempting to overtake another private bus. 

Police stated that 10 Police Inspectors were traveling in the jeep at the time of the accident and that a female Police Inspector was killed in the accident along with three male Inspectors.

The other six Inspectors who received injuries and the driver of the ill-fated bus had been admitted to Minuwangoda Hospital and later transferred to Gampaha General Hospital for further treatment.

Hospital Director Doctor H.P.W. Hewawitharana said that a female Police Inspector was among the injured, while one injured Police Inspector had to undergo an urgent surgery.
