COVID-19 vaccines were administered to 50,812 persons on Thursday and 58.68% of the total population has received both doses of a vaccine to date.
According to Our World in Data, the first dose has been administered to 68.59% of the population. The Epidemiology Unit states that 14,754,334 persons have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 12,657,989 persons have received the second dose as well.
Meanwhile, Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena said vaccination of school children aged between 18 and 19 years commenced in Colombo District yesterday. At the Special Committee on COVID-19 Control meeting held yesterday, Dr. Gunawardena said vaccination of children in this age group will commence in other districts on 21 October.
School children will be administered a single dose while children with congenital diseases will receive both doses.
A program to administer booster shots will begin after school children are vaccinated, health officials said. According to State Pharmaceuticals Corporation Chairman Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, a consignment of 600,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are scheduled to arrive on Monday.
The first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 478,454 persons and the second dose has been administered to 425,175 persons. On Thursday, 892 persons received the first dose of the vaccine and 434 persons received the second dose of Pfizer.
The first dose of Sinopharm was administered to 8,194 persons on Thursday and 35,155 persons received the second dose of the vaccine. In total, the first dose of Sinopharm has been administered to 11,834,121 persons and the second dose has been administered to 9,981,562 persons.
The first dose of AstraZeneca has been administered to 1,479,565 persons, of which 1,333,617 persons have received the second dose as well. On Thursday, 6,047 persons received the second dose of AstraZeneca.
Forty-five persons received the first dose of Moderna on Thursday and 45 persons received the second dose of Moderna. In total, 803,098 persons have received the first dose of the vaccine and 762,043 persons have received the second dose of Moderna.
The Epidemiology Unit states that 159,096 persons have received the first dose of Sputnik V and 155,592 persons have received the second dose of Sputnik V.
