588 persons test positive for COVID-19

 Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 case count rose to 590,651 with the detection of 588 COVID-19 positive persons yesterday.

The patients detected yesterday include 581 persons from the New Year cluster and seven overseas arrivals.

On Thursday, 572 persons from the New Year cluster and 12 Sri Lankan overseas returnees tested positive for COVID-19. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 7,150 PCR tests and 5,406 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Thursday.

In total, 485,845 persons from the New Year cluster, 82,785 persons from the Peliyagoda cluster, 9,068 persons from the Prisons cluster and 3,059 persons from the Divulapitiya cluster have tested positive for COVID-19.

The country’s imported cases include 7,064 Sri Lankan overseas returnees and 328 foreigners.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 118,123 patients from Colombo, 102,035 patients from Gampaha, 53,999 patients from Kalutara, 38,548 patients from Galle, and 28,768 patients from Kurunegala have been detected.

COVID-19 detections during the third wave of the pandemic include 85,826 persons from Colombo, 83,501 persons from Gampaha, and 46,941 persons from Kalutara.

At present, 8,792 persons are under medical or home-based care and 2,452 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

The country’s COVID-19 recoveries rose to 566,760 with 160 persons released from care yesterday.

The Epidemiology Unit added that 5,043 persons who recovered from COVID-19 between 21 December 2021 and 5 January were added to the total COVID-19 recoveries. The persons completed home-based care without requiring hospitalisation and included those from the tri-forces, Sri Lanka police, and prisons.
