The Education Ministry has planned to recruit over 6,000 new teachers this year, says the Government.
According to Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, of the 6,728 appointments, 3,554 are to be given on October 06, the World Teachers’ Day.
The new teachers include 3,000 teacher trainees passed out from the National Education Colleges and 554 English medium teachers. The English medium teachers are to be assigned teaching science subjects in national schools.
A competitive examination is scheduled to be held on 9 October at 34 centres in Colombo to recruit 3,174 teachers of aesthetics subjects. Those who are selected will be given appointments before November, the Minister said.
The Minister said that the results of the competitive examinations had been dispatched to Provincial Councils so that interested councils could recruit teachers based on the results of these examinations, after the Central Government Ministry recruited the number required.
