7th Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians for International Criminal Court and Rule of Law

A Sri Lankan delegation led by MP and Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management Nimal Siripala de Silva will be leaving to Rome today to attend the 7th Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians for International Criminal Court and Rule of Law and the World Parliamentary Conference on Human Rights, 34th Annual Forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA).

De Silva is also the Chairman of PGA Sri Lanka Chapter. The Lankan delegation comprises MP and Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem, MP and PGA Sri Lanka Chapter Secretary Thilanga Sumathipala, MP Early Gunasekera, MP Rosy Senanayake, Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasana Ranatunga and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Nimal Lanza.

The 7th session of the Assembly will be held from 10 to 11 December at the Camera dei Deputati, Rome Italy.

The Assembly will determine the following areas: Promoting the Universality of the Rome Statue system 10 years after its entry into force; challenges for States and international organisations, the role of parliamentarians ; Investigations and prosecutions of the ICC; Strengthening the rule of law and the judicial system through effective application of the principle of complementarity (under the Rome statute), Defender of Democracy Award 2012, ceremony; Parliamentary contribution to effective cooperation with the ICC; the role of Parliament on the amendments to the Rome statute concerning war crimes and crime of aggression; the deterrent effect of the ICC and its impact on peace, stability and democracy; the future of international criminal justice; consideration and discussion of Rome Action Plan for the ICC and Rule of Law; and strengthening democratic institutions, accountability and rule of law through the Universality and Effectiveness of the Rome Statute of the ICC system.
