87 persons test positive for COVID-19 over the weekend

Weekend COVID-19 detections totalled 87, with daily detections remaining below 60 on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 33 persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday. This is the lowest number of COVID-19 cases detected in a day since 8 October 2020, when 29 COVID-19 patients were detected.

The previous day, 54 COVID-19 cases were detected. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 1,753 PCR tests and 1,369 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Saturday.

A total of 662,592 COVID-19 patients have been detected to date. This includes 74,987 COVID-19 detections since 1 January. In addition to this, 483,090 patients from the New Year cluster, 82,785 patients from the Peliyagoda cluster, 9,154 patients from the Prisons cluster and 3,059 patients from the Divulapitiya cluster have been detected.

The country’s imported cases include 7,242 Sri Lankan returnees from overseas and 328 foreigners.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 138,965 persons from Colombo, 114,326 persons from Gampaha, 58,200 persons from Kalutara, 45,555 persons from Galle, and 31,478 persons from Kurunegala have tested positive for COVID-19.

During the third wave of the pandemic, 106,668 persons from Colombo, 95,792 persons from Gampaha, and 51,142 persons from Kalutara tested positive for COVID-19.

At present, 3,603 persons are under medical and home-based care. The Epidemiology Unit adds that 303 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are under observation.

Seven persons were discharged from treatment centres as well as home-based care yesterday and the country’s COVID-19 recoveries have risen to 642,500.
