The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York hosted members of the United Nations Hospitality Committee for Delegations (HCUND) to a ‘Sri Lankan Saree Extravaganza’ at the Mission premises on 30 May.

The ladies viewed a short presentation on the handloom sarees of Sri Lanka, different drapes of sarees worn in the country.  They were also briefed on the versatility of the saree, which is worn in different spheres of life, from the bride to the housewife and the professional woman and to the woman working in the tea estates.

Models displayed the different drapes of saree worn by the ladies of Sri Lanka for occasions such as weddings, cocktails and the office. The guests were then afforded an opportunity to drape a saree style of their choice and model it.  Door gifts of ‘Pure Ceylon Tea’ and Ayurvedic soap were given to the guests.

The event concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan afternoon tea comprising of lavariya, thalaguli and Ceylon Tea.
