The Attorney General’s Department yesterday informed the Court of Appeal that steps have been taken to provide former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara with adequate security as requested by the police sleuth.
Additional Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysuriya representing the Attorney General accordingly informed the court of steps taken to heighten the security provided for Abeysekara when the petition filed by the latter requesting for adequate security was taken up before the court yesterday.
Abeysuriya said the police have provided additional security personnel and police escorts to Abeysekara.
Appearing for Abeysekara, Presidents Counsel Upul Jayasuriya told courts the party intends to present facts before the court on how the respondents named in the petition failed to provide security to the policeman according to the order issued by the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses, in contempt of court. Jayasuriya said the facts will be presented through an amended petition.
The Court of Appeal decided to allow the amended petition and ordered for it to be filed on 28 June. The petition was taken up before the President of the Court Appeal Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Appeal Court Justice M.A.R. Marikkar.
