In response to queries posed at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the all-party conference represents a significant step in the nation’s journey towards reconciliation and national unity.

Through the discussions the President aims to find a comprehensive solution that upholds the rights and aspirations of all its citizens, promoting a harmonious and inclusive society,” he added.

Gunawardena said the Government will only implement the 13A if there is broad support for the implementation of the constitutional amendment, emphasising the need for collective discussions first.

Before his India visit, President Wickremesinghe assured Tamil parties that the 13th Amendment would be fully implemented, albeit without police powers, in the provincial councils.  The Tamils issue featured prominently in their discussions, and Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of implementing the 13th Amendment (13A) to the Sri Lankan Constitution.
