Two persons died and three suffered serious injuries last morning due to a collision between a Police vehicle and a three-wheeler in Katupotha, Wariyapola. The driver of the Police jeep, a constable, has also been hospitalised for injuries sustained in the accident.

According to Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, the deceased was the 40-year-old driver of the three-wheeler and his 69-year-old mother, who were on a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura when the accident occurred.

The other three occupants of the three-wheeler, the 34-year-old wife of the driver and their two daughters, aged 13 and nine, were admitted to the Kurunegala hospital with serious injuries. The Police believe that the occupants in the three-wheeler are residents of Viyangoda.

“The Police jeep involved in the accident was from the Katupotha Police Station and was returning to the station after trying to apprehend a suspect in an unrelated case. A special investigation has been launched into the incident, led by the Senior Superintendent of Police in Kuliyapitiya. The constable who drove the police vehicle, who is under treatment, will be arrested; and we plan to take legal action against him,” DIG Rohana said.
