Active COVID-19 cases drop to 131

  • No new cases identified yesterday

The total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the island remains unchanged at 2,902, with no new patients being identified yesterday and the number of active cases declined to 131. 

According to the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPC), the two patients identified the previous day were both overseas arrivals. One was a returnee from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and was undergoing quarantine in Punani, while the other was a returnee from South Sudan and was undergoing quarantine in Negombo.

A total of 975 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad have tested positive for COVID-19 so far, along with 34 foreigners. Of the local cases, 950 are Navy personnel and their close contacts. With no new cases identified from the Kandakadu cluster, the number of patients connected to the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre remains at 629. This includes 508 detainees undergoing rehabilitation, 67 staff members, five guest staff members, and 48 family members and close associates.

The total number of active cases in the island dropped to 131 yesterday, with 81 persons receiving treatment at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 19 at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), 18 at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, and 13 at the Iranawila Hospital.

The Kandakadu Treatment Centre currently has zero COVID-19 patients under its care, following the recovery of two persons yesterday. According to the Epidemiology Unit, a total of five persons were discharged having recovered from COVD-19 during the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. yesterday, including two from the Welikanda Base Hospital, two from the Kandakadu Treatment Centre, and one from the NIID.

Of the Kandakadu cluster, 567 persons have recovered so far and 62 persons are currently under medical care.

The total number of COVID-19 recoveries in the island has risen to 2,760 and the Health Promotion Bureau states that the country’s recovery rate is 95.11%. With 11 COVID-19-related deaths, Sri Lanka’s fatality rate is 0.38%.

The Health Promotion Bureau adds that 195,025 PCR tests have been carried out so far, including 3,518 tests on Tuesday. This is the highest number of tests conducted in a day in Sri Lanka, with some of the highest numbers seen on 11 August with 2,909 tests and 15 August with 2,839 tests.

In addition to this, 62 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are currently being monitored at various hospitals, of which 27 are at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

In a statement issued yesterday, the NOCPC stated that 111 persons left quarantine centres during the day, including 67 from Vidaththapalai, 24 from Mulankavil, 11 from Nipuna Boossa, five from Mount Lavinia, and four from the Fairway Hotel Quarantine Centre.

A total of 31,021 persons have left quarantine centres so far having completed the process and a further 5,632 remain in 43 centres in the island.

The NOCPC added that flights carrying 364 persons from Qatar, 13 persons from Dubai, and 10 persons from London arrived in the island yesterday. All arrivals have been directed to quarantine centres managed by the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and Sri Lanka Air Force.
