State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe yesterday announced the disbursement of Rs. 1.55 billion as part of the second phase of the ‘Aswesuma’ welfare benefits program.

As the Government's commitment to social welfare projects continue, this contribution will assist an extra 257,170 individuals.

Taking to ‘X’, he assured the payments were transferred to state banks and are slated to be credited to the beneficiary accounts by today (8).

The Welfare Benefits Board will proceed with payments for the remaining beneficiaries following the verification of accounts, Semasinghe said.

He revealed plans to streamline the process by enabling a one-time disbursement for both July and August, once the July payments are concluded.

In the initial phase of the welfare benefits program 791,000 beneficiaries received over Rs. 5 billion, affirming the Government's dedication to provide crucial financial support to vulnerable groups. The second phase saw over 1 million (1,048,170) families receive over Rs. 6.65 billion.

Semasinghe assured that upon completion of the surveys related to appeals and objections, payments will be promptly distributed to all eligible beneficiaries, ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it the most.
