Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs expresses condolences over Easter Sunday terror attacks

Marise Payne, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs attended the Special Memorial Mass held at the St. Mary’s Cathedral on 26 April and offered condolences to Consul General Lal Wickrematunge in the wake of the Easter Sunday attacks which caused extensive loss of life and injuries to many more.

The Minister participated at the Special Memorial Service presided over by the Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Fisher Archbishop of Sydney and following the Mass the silent candle light vigil organised by the Consulate General together with the Sri Lankan community in Sydney.

At the St. Mary’s Cathedral Minister Marise Payne also signed the Condolence Book which was kept open by the Consulate General for the dignitaries attending the Mass.

Writing in the condolence book Foreign Minister Marise Payne stated, “The prayers and thoughts of Australia are with Sri Lanka. We mourn with you and the families and friends of those lost in these attacks. On behalf of the Australian Government our most sincere condolences.” 

Consul General Lal Wickrematunge appreciated the sentiments expressed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, support extended by the Australian Government and sympathised with the Australians for the loss of two Sri Lankan-Australian dual citizens following these attacks.
