Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday met with Nepal Ambassador Bashu Dev Mishra and discussed commencing direct flights between Colombo and Lumbini.
The Ambassador at the discussions requested to extend flights already in operation between Colombo Nepal’s Capital Kathmandu up to Lumbini.
Ambassador Mishra pointed out that the proposed expansion services would be a great relief for Sri Lankan pilgrims visiting Nepal to pay homage to Lumbini — the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
He also said that a large number of Nepalese were willing to visit Sri Lanka and therefore more air connectivity from Colombo to Lumbini would reinforce the long-standing friendship and bilateral relations between the two countries.
Minister de Silva in response commended the timely proposal and said he will seek approval for a favourable reply in the immediate future after discussing with the SriLankan Airlines, Civil Aviation Authority and Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.
The Minister and Ambassador also discussed boosting trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra also attended the meeting.
