A system to generate electricity using garbage has been promised by the British Government to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Business Development, due to the expected difficulties in power generation in the season.
This discussion has taken place, earlier this week, during a meeting between Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake and the British High Commissioner James Dauris. This will be an important milestone in the domain of power generation, as the process of acquiring affordable and environmentally-friendly ways of generating electricity is seen as a means of meeting the supply for the growing demand of power.
According to the Minister, though hydropower is the main and most affordable form of power generation in Sri Lanka, all sources of water that can be used to generate power has been utilised. Therefore, to supply for the growing demand of power, the Ministry has turned towards renewable sources of power, thus, the Minister stated that, using garbage to generate power will not only help solve the problem of power supply, but will also help the issue of disposing garbage.
Stating his excitement for the project, Minister Karunanayake said that even the problem of garbage disposal at the face of the increasing population will be tackled through this affordable and useful method. Karunanayake further gave assurance that the Government and Ministry officials will be briefed about the upcoming project before long, and stated he expects the full corporation from the British Government for the successful completion of the project.
Expressing how Sri Lanka is at an optimum level of power supply among the regional competitors, the High Commissioner stated that power generation through renewable energy sources will not only help reduce environmental damage, but will also help reduce costs of power making it affordable for the public.
He further mentioned how utilising the system of power generation through garbage, with the use of the technical knowledge from Britain, will not only bring relief to the consumers in the country, but will also help the power industry in the long run.
