CBSL says authorities should be honest with public about economic situation

  • Says months ahead will be challenging till debt restructuring begins

Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe yesterday told the Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance that the authorities should be honest with the public about the situation of the economy and all parties should extend support to efforts to revive the economy.

The CBSL Governor, Ministry of Finance Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena and other senior officials of CBSL and the Ministry of Finance appeared before the Committee yesterday.

They briefed the Committee on the present status of the economy and the assistance that has been received by different countries in the past few weeks and how the funds are being directed towards ensuring that the basic needs of the public are met.

He explained that the coming months will be challenging until the debt restructuring gets underway.

Committee Chairman SLPP MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa suggested for a report to be compiled with the policy decisions that are being taken as they can be scrutinised when the need arises. Several Government and Opposition MPs attended the committee meeting.
