The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday questioned the former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda for eight hours over his role in the abduction of 11 youths during 2008-2009 period.

Following a court order, Karannagoda arrived at the CID yesterday at 9.00 a.m. to make a statement regarding the case. He has left the CID premises around 5.00 p.m., sources said.

The CID previously informed the Court that sufficient evidence was available to name Karannagoda as a suspect in the abduction of 11 youths. Sri Lanka Police last month added Karannagoda to a list of 14 men accused of abducting 11 youth from wealthy families in 2008-2009 to extort money.

Former Admiral Karannagoda filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an interim order preventing the CID from arresting him in connection with the case.

The Supreme Court last week issued an interim order preventing the arrest of Karannagoda over the case but ordered him to appear before the CID on 11 March at 9.00 a.m. to provide a statement over the incident.

Karannagoda has been summoned to the CID again tomorrow to record further statements.
