The Health Services Director General on Wednesday confirmed 94 COVID-19 deaths, raising the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,821.
A total of 313 COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in August and there has been a steady increase in the number of daily COVID-19 fatalities. On 1 August, health officials confirmed 63 deaths, on 2 August, 74 COVID-19 deaths were confirmed, and on 3 August, 82 COVID-19 deaths were confirmed.
Of the total fatalities, 2,799 are male and 2,022 are female. This includes the COVID-19 deaths confirmed on Wednesday, of which 49 were male and 45 were female. According to the Department of Government Information, 73 persons above age 60, 19 persons between ages 30 and 59, and two persons below age of 30 are among the deaths confirmed on Wednesday.
Of the country’s COVID-19 fatalities, 74.91% are above age 60, 23.88% are between ages 30 and 59, and 1.21% are below age 30.
According to Health Minister Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, 14 children below age 18 have died of COVID-19 thus far.
“The possibility of administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children below the age of 18 is currently being studied and a final decision will be made by the Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases (ACCD) for COVID-19 vaccinations for children,” she said.
