COVID-19 fatalities rise to 2,136

Health authorities yesterday confirmed 63 COVID-19 deaths between 23 May and 11 June, bringing the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 2,136.

According to the Department of Government Information (DGI), 12 deaths occurred between 23 May and 31 May, while 51 deaths occurred in June.

47 persons died while receiving treatment, nine died while being admitted to a treatment centre, and seven died at home.

33 of the persons were male and 30 were female. The DGI states that 23 persons were between ages 70 and 79, 15 persons were between ages 60 and 69, and 11 persons were between ages 80 and 89.

The causes of death include COVID-19 associated with diseases such as COVID pneumonia, multi-organ failure, myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, hypothyroidism, meningoencephalitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, stroke, cellulitis, and diabetes.

The DGI also cites chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, acute coronary syndrome, bronchial asthma, cardiopulmonary arrest, COVID-19 chest infection, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia, septic shock, heart failure and complications of respiratory diseases as causes of death.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 97 COVID-19 deaths are reported per one million persons in the country. With 1,484 COVID-19 fatalities reported on 1 June, health authorities have confirmed over 600 COVID-19 deaths this month.

The Epidemiology Unit’s situation report issued on 14 April, which is before the emergence of the New Year cluster, records 602 COVID-19 deaths.
