The Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday revealed to the Parliament of 43 former Government MPs who received a staggering over Rs. 1.22 billion (over Rs. 1,224 million) in compensation for property damage incurred during the 2022 Aragalaya protest.

The disclosure which included a detailed list of compensation amounts received by individual MPs reignited the debate over power abuse and financial mismanagement by the former administration amidst the worst financial crisis the country faced post-independence.

Dr. Jayatissa made this revelation in response to a query posed by Opposition MP Nalin Bandara and said some of these compensations were paid using the President’s Fund.

He accused former MPs of exploiting their influence to secure payouts that far exceeded standard compensation limits.

“Under existing disaster relief policies, even in cases of total property destruction due to natural disasters, the maximum compensation is capped at Rs. 2.5 million. Yet, 43 former MPs received sums exponentially higher than this limit,” Dr. Jayatissa said.

The 2022 Aragalaya protests driven by public frustration over economic mismanagement and Government corruption led to the resignation of then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The protests saw widespread unrest, including the burning of properties belonging to politicians.

Dr. Jayatissa asserted that no coalition of political parties can stop the Government’s efforts towards a system change. “We are aware of the discussions happening even inside the Parliamentary premises. It is not to support our work, but to sabotage our efforts because all are part of this corrupt system, which put the country down through power abuse, corruption and financial mismanagement,” he said.
