Cabinet yesterday rubber-stamped a proposal by the Transport Ministry to increase bus fares by 12.5% with the minimum fare increased to Rs. 12, but insisted that no changes would be made for the next two years.
The fare increase, which came into effect on Tuesday, was negotiated between the bus owners and the Government after fuel price increases earlier this month.
During the previous Cabinet only a 6.25% price increase was approved but after extensive discussions between stakeholders the percentage was raised.
The minimum fare, which was previously Rs. 10, was proposed by be increased to Rs. 11 but because bus owners argued that collection would be difficult, it was changed to Rs. 12.
