The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved obtaining a grant of 300 million yen from Japan to purchase 28 garbage compactors to further its Clean Sri Lanka initiative.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday said the Government of Japan has agreed to provide the grant at the request of the Government of Sri Lanka.

He said the grant under the Japan Economic and Social Development program will be implemented under the supervision of the Public Administration Ministry, the Provincial Government and Local Government and it is proposed to distribute 14 compactors for the Western Province, eight compactors for the Eastern Province, and six compactors for the Northern Province.

Dr. Jayatissa said the lack of advanced waste management infrastructure facilities has been the main obstacle to the achievement of a clean, sustainable and environmentally responsible model in the country.

The proposal to this effect was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as the Finance, Planning, and Economic Development Minister to obtain the said grant under the Japan Economic and Social Development program.
