The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal aims to forge a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the MCC - Sinohydro Consortium to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for implementing a permanent solution to prevent damage caused by floods surrounding the Gin river area.

The Gin river region has been grappling with recurring floods, posing a significant threat to the safety and well-being of its residents. The need for an enduring solution to tackle this issue has long been recognised, and the decision to collaborate with the MCC - Sinohydro Consortium for a feasibility study marks a major stride towards achieving that goal.

The study will examine various factors, including the region’s topography, hydrology, and historical flood patterns, to ascertain the root causes and devise targeted measures for flood prevention. Additionally, environmental impact assessments and stakeholder consultations will be crucial components of the study, ensuring a holistic approach to the proposed solution.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Irrigation Minister Roshan Ranasinghe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
