The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday gave its green light to implement a capital grant project to boost revenue generation in selected Pradeshiya Sabhas.
The move covering the years 2025-2027 seeks to address disparities identified in a recent performance evaluation of Local Government authorities, while reducing financial reliance on the General Treasury.
As part of the groundwork for this project, the Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Governments Ministry conducted a comprehensive performance evaluation of Local Government authorities for the year 2022 and 2023.
These assessments examined various aspects including management practices, service delivery, administrative efficiency and contributions toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said evaluation highlighted disparities in the quality and quantity of services provided by different Pradeshiya Sabhas due to regional variations.
To address these challenges, he said the approved policies will provide capital grants to 54 Pradeshiya Sabhas with six selected from each province, beginning in 2025.
“By empowering the Local Government bodies, the program intends to become self-reliant and reduce their dependence on central funding,” he added.
