Cabinet nod to gazette Bill on Contempt of Court

The Cabinet of Ministers approved publishing the draft Bill on Contempt of Court in the Government gazette and subsequently tabling it in the Parliament for its approval.

On 27 June 2022, Cabinet approved introducing legal enactments on “Contempt of Court” which includes clear and precise provisions and situational circumstances regarding the offence, defence and easing the penalty as well as the procedure to follow when easing the penalty.

The draft Bill, prepared by the Legal Draftsman, later received the Attorney General’s clearance.

The proposal to this effect submitted by the Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
