Cabinet nod to introduce digital driving licence

The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved the introduction of a new digital driving licence to replace the existing driving licence.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa noted that this initiative will replace the current smart card-based licence system, which has been in use for nearly 15 years.

He also highlighted that the Government has identified the suitability of issuing a digital driving licence, which is currently used in many countries of the world, in accordance with new technology, facilitating data exchange between multiple relevant institutions. 

While the steps to promptly introduce a new digital driving licence in place of the currently used driving license, he said the Government will continue to implement the current methodology for issuing driving licences until then.
