The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved the introduction of a Parliamentary Act to administer and perform activities of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation.
Considering the powers vested with this office, it has been recognised that a permanent establishment for this office is appropriate to extend its monitoring activities as well as be initiated by an Act.
“The Cabinet of Ministers decided to instruct the legal draftsman to prepare a bill to establish the proposed to administer and perform activities of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.
The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation was founded to provide opportunities in the economic, social, cultural, and political sectors, secure identity and develop a society that respects and recognises diversity and one in which all communities can live in harmony and cooperation.
The proposal to this effect tabled by Justice, Prison Activities and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
