Deputy Chief of Mission of the Chinese Embassy Pang Chunxue and State Minister Wijekala Maheshwaren handed over stationary packages to 1,000 students in Batticaloa last week.

At a special ceremony held at a Batticaloa school on 11 September where the packages were distributed, Pang remarked that China and Sri Lanka are traditional friends. The two peoples’ connection and communication dated back thousands of years, she said. Under the framework of China’s Belt and Road initiative, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has been enhanced, what with the launch of mega projects such as the Colombo Financial City and the Hambantota Port and Industrial Zone. China is committed to promoting people-to-people exchanges and striving to bring more tangible benefits to the two peoples. The Students’ Aid Rally was a sign, she said, that China delivered its promises and continued our long-term friendship.

Maheswaran, meanwhile, said China is a traditional friend of Sri Lanka, offering huge donations and supports to the island nation. The Sri Lankan side would like to extend its sincere thanks to the Chinese Government and people and would always keep this in mind, she said. “We look forward to cooperating with the Chinese Embassy to bring more tangible benefits to local residents, especially women and children,” said Maheswaran.

The donation is a part of Chinese Embassy’s Students’ Aid Rally which started from Tangalle in the Southern Province.
