Former Minister and Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday filed a motion before Colombo High Court seeking permission to visit his child in Canada.

The case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Damith Totawatte and after considering what Counsel appearing on behalf of Ranawaka, the court permitted him to travel to Canada to visit his child from 13 May to 23 September.

Ranawaka is currently an accused in a road accident case and the court had already restrained him from foreign travel. He is an accused in the road accident case that took place in Rajagiriya in 2016. Ranawaka’s vehicle was involved in an accident in Rajagiriya in 2016, critically injuring a motorcyclist who had reportedly fled the scene and had later produced his driver in court as the one who had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

However later it was discovered that Ranawaka has driven the vehicle and was arrested and remanded in December 2019 on the instructions of the Attorney General.

The AG thereafter filed indictments against Ranawaka for causing grievous injury to a person by rash and negligent acts.
