Colombo Magistrate Court grants bail to Chamara Sampath misappropriation case

Remains in remand over separate charges

Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday granted bail to New Democratic Front Badulla District Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath Dassanayake in connection with the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 1 million in public funds belonging to the Uva Provincial Council.

The case pertains to financial irregularities allegedly committed by Dassanayake during his tenure as a member of the Uva Provincial Council in 2016. The bail order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali, following submissions made by both the prosecution and the defence.

As per the Court’s ruling, Dassanayake was released on a Rs. 50,000 cash bail along with two surety bails amounting to Rs. 2 million each. In addition, an overseas travel ban was imposed on the MP.

Representing the accused, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa made a request to the Court to permit his client to attend Parliamentary sittings scheduled for 8 and 9 April. The Magistrate affirmed there was no legal impediment preventing the MP from attending Parliament.

The case on the alleged misappropriation of funds will be taken up again for hearing on 17 June.

Despite receiving bail in this case, Dassanayake will continue to remain in remand till 21 April due to a separate case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The Badulla Magistrate’s Court issued the remand order on Monday in relation to that case.
